READING TEST FORMAT:
  1. The IELTS Reading test takes 60 minutes and it contains 40 questions.
  2. This module is different for both the Academic and General training.
  3. At the end there is No Extra Time to transfer answers to an answer sheet.
  4. Each correctly answered question is awarded with one mark; therefore the maximum score you can get is 40.
  5. Attempt all of the questions; there is no penalty for incorrect answers.
IELTS READING STRATEGIES:
  • Read a lot.
It will help you a lot if you start reading something in English everyday. It doesn't really matter what you read. Read something that you enjoy or read articles from newspapers. It will increase your reading speed.
  • Time management.
You will have just 60 minutes to complete 40 questions, so you must utilise your time wisely. I suggest you to try to answer each section in 20 minutes and check your answers at the end. Do not spend a large amount of time on one question. If you are not able to find the answer, move on to the next one. You can come back to that questions later.
  •  Read the instructions.
There are many students who lose marks in IELTS Reading test because they don’t read the instructions properly. So, always read the instructions first.
  • Don't need to understand everything.
In the reading test there will be many words which will be totally new for you, If you don’t understand a word in the test, just try to understand the sentences around it for general idea and its meaning. don’t worry about the words you don’t understand. 
  • Do not panic.
Some questions will be easy and some will be extremely difficult. Stay calm in that situation and keep your nerves under control. 
  • Improve Your Vocabulary.
You will need to learn a wide range of vocabulary to understand the passages of text. You must have knowledge of synonyms and paraphrasing if you wish to identify the information to answer the questions correctly.
  • Skimming and Scanning
Skimming means reading a text to get a general idea of the content. This is recommended to do before you read the questions. Then you should underline the key words you see. you don’t need to read the passage first. Scanning is your ability to location of information.
  • Choose your own technique.
You should choose your techniques by yourself and should learn how to search for right answers and what to do first. It is differ from person to person.
  • Spelling.
A spelling mistake counts as a wrong answer. So, it is very important that you check the spelling at the end. IELTS accept both American and British English spellings. Be careful to use singular and plural correctly.
  • Clear Handwriting.
Write your answers clearly because illegible handwriting counts as a wrong answer, you can lose marks. If possible then try to write each answer in CAPITAL LETTERS.
