IELTS Speaking Test Part 1 takes about 4-5 minutes and you will be asked questions about familiar topics only.

Trying to memorise answers for the IELTS  speaking test is a very bad idea, but you can learn answering questions by practising them daily.

There are certain question types, such as likes-dislikes, giving opinion, talking about past and future, comparing and contrasting, explaining and evaluating someone else's opinion that come up very regularly in the IELTS Speaking Test. 

Here are the list of topics and questions for IELTS Speaking Test Part 1.

1. Family :
  • Do you like to live in a joint family or a nuclear family?
  • Can you tell me something about them?
  • How much time do you manage to spare with your family members? 
  • What types of activities do you like to do together with your family?
2. Accommodation :
  • What kind of accommodation do you live in?
  • Have you always lived there?
  • What are the main advantages of this accommodation?
  • What change would you like to make to improve it?
  • Is there anything that you don't like about living in that place?
  • Would it be easy for you to move to another place/accommodation?
  • Do many people in your country live in such a place/accommodation?
3. Education :
  • What do you study at present?
  • What is special about this subject?
  • Where do you study?

4. Job :

9. Leisure :

  • How did you become interested in?[whatever hobby/interest the candidate mentions?]
  • What is there to do in your leisure time in your home town/ village/city?
  • How do you usually spend your holidays?
10. Colour :
  • What is your favourite colour?
  • Do you like the same colour now as you did when you were younger/child? Why /why not?
  • What can you learn about a person from colours they like?
  • Does colours have meaning in your country?
  • Are there any colours you dislike?
11. Entertainment :
  • Do you like relaxing at home or going out in the evening?
  • When you go out for an evening what do you prefer to do?
  • How popular is this among other people in your country?
  • Is there any type of entertainment you do not like? Why?
12. Books :
  • Do you like reading books?
  • When do you usually read?
  • Which books do you like to read? Why?

Note :
  • Don't give one or two word answers. Give at least one or two sentences answers. This is your chance to show your English to the examiner and holding back is not going to help you score your desired bands so be confident, relax and enjoy speaking in English.
