IELTS Speaking part 1 Sample Topics with Questions

IELTS Speaking Test Part 1 takes about 4-5 minutes and you will be asked questions about familiar topics only.

Trying to memorise answers for the IELTS  speaking test is a very bad idea, but you can learn answering questions by practising them daily.

There are certain question types, such as likes-dislikes, giving opinion, talking about past and future, comparing and contrasting, explaining and evaluating someone else's opinion that come up very regularly in the IELTS Speaking Test. 

Here are the list of topics and questions for IELTS Speaking Test Part 1.

1. Family :

• Do you like to live in a joint family or a nuclear family?
• Can you tell me something about them?
• How much time do you manage to spare with your family members? 
• What types of activities do you like to do together with your family?

2. Accommodation :

• What kind of accommodation do you live in?
• Have you always lived there?
• What are the main advantages of this accommodation?
• What change would you like to make to improve it?
• Is there anything that you don't like about living in that place?
• Would it be easy for you to move to another place/accommodation?
• Do many people in your country live in such a place/accommodation?

3. Education :

• What do you study at present?
• What is special about this subject?
• Where do you study? 
• What’s your university/college like?
• Have you finished your higher education?
• What have you studied at university?
• What did you like about your university? 
• Was there anything you found difficult?

4. Job :

• What's your job?
• Is it common job in your country?
• What are your working hours?
• Do you get a lot of vacation or off time?
• Are you thinking of changing your job?

5. Daily routine :

• What would you like to change in your everyday routine?
• Are all your days the same?
• Tell me about your typical week-day / weekend?
• What is the same balance of work/study and free time in your normal day?

6. Your friends :

• Do you have lot of friends?
• Do you prefer to have one particular friend or group of friends? Why?
• Are your friends mostly of different ages or your age? Why?
• What do you like doing the most with your friends?
• The last time you saw your friends what did you do together with them?
• What makes a friends into a good friend?
• Do you think it’s important to keep in contact with your friends you know as child? Why?

7. Relatives :

• Who are more important to you, your relatives or friends? 
• When did you last see your relatives?
• How do you spend time with your relatives?
• Are people in your country usually close with their family and relatives?

8. Your favourite place :

• What place do you most like to visit?
• How often do you visit this place? Why do you like it so much?
• Is it popular with many other people?
• Has it changed since you first went there? If yes then in what way?

9. Leisure :

• Do you have any hobbies or interests?
• How did you become interested in?[whatever hobby/interest the candidate mentions?]
• What is there to do in your leisure time in your home town/ village/city?
• How do you usually spend your holidays?

10. Colour :

• What is your favourite colour?
• Do you like the same colour now as you did when you were younger/child? Why /why not?
• What can you learn about a person from colours they like?
• Does colours have meaning in your country?
• Are there any colours you dislike?

11. Entertainment :

• Do you like relaxing at home or going out in the evening?
• When you go out for an evening what do you prefer to do?
• How popular is this among other people in your country?
• Is there any type of entertainment you do not like? Why?

12. Books :

• Do you like reading books?
• When do you usually read?
• Which books do you like to read? Why?
• Where do you like to read? Why?
• Do others in your family read books too?
• Do you usually buy your books from a special place/shop? Why?
• Do you think people read less today compare to the past?

13. Dancing :

• Do you enjoy dancing? Why/why not?
• Has anyone ever taught you to dance? 
• Tell me about few traditional dancing types of your country.
• Do you think that traditional dancing will be popular in the near future? Why?

14. Festival :

• Tell me about the most important festival of your country.
• Which one is your favourite festival? Why?
• What special activities and food dishes are connected with this festival?
• What do you most enjoy about it?
• Do you think festivals are important for a nation?

15. Fruits :

• Do you eat fruits?
• How often do you eat fruits?
• Where do you buy your fruits from?
• Do you think it’s essential for people to eat fruits? Why?

16. Food and cooking :

• What type of food do you prefer to consume?
• What kind of new food you like to eat? Why?
• Do you like cooking? Why /why not?
• Do you prefer food from restaurant or home cooked food? Why?
• Do people in your country often eat together?
• Why are family meals less common today?
• Is this a positive or negative development?
• Are international foods a threat to the traditional culture of your nation?

17. Clothes :

• How important are clothes and fashion to you? Why?
• What kind of clothes you dislike?
• How different are the clothes you wear now from those you wore 10 to 15 years ago?
• Do you think the clothes we wear represent about us?

18. Cold weather :

• Have you ever been in very cold weather? When?
• Is the weather cold where you come from?
• Does some parts of your nation colder than others?
• Would you like to live in a warm or a cold place?

19. Seasons :

• What your favourite seasons?
• Tell me about the particular seasons in your country.
• Does the fashion in your country change with the seasons?
• Do any types of work people do in your country which change with the seasons?
• Is tourism popular in a specific season in your country?

20. Neighbourhood :

• Which part of town do you live in?
• What’s it like?
• What type of shops are there in your neighbourhood?

• What’s difficult about living there?

21. Your country :

• Which part of your nation do most people live in?
• Tell me about the main industries there.
• Is it easy to travel around your country?
• Has your country changed since you were young?

22. Visitors :

• What would you suggest a visitor to do / see in your country?
• Are they any traditional arts or music you would suggest?
• Tell me about the kind of foreign visitors or tourists you have seen.

23. Music instruments :

• In your country, what do people normally offer guests to drink when they visit to you?

48. Numbers :

• Do you have a favourite numbers? 
• Are you good at memorising numbers?

• Would you like to do a job which deals with numbers?

49. Language :

• Which language do you speak?
• What are the common languages in your country?
• Would you like to learn a new language?
• Is it important to speak foreign language? 

50. Laughing :

• What kind of things make you laugh?
• Do you like making other people laugh Why?
• Do you think it is essential for people to laugh?

Note :

• Don't give one or two word answers. Give at least one or two sentences answers. This is your chance to show your English to the examiner and holding back is not going to help you score your desired bands so be confident, relax and enjoy speaking in English.
