IELTS WRITING STRATEGIES:
- Plan and analyse the answer.
First of all, always analyse each task properly and take some time making notes. Don't just start writing when time starts. Spend initial time on planning and more time on Task 2, as it is worth twice then Task 1.
- Use proper Structure.
Structure is essential part for IELTS writing Test. Write clear introduction, think about 2 main ideas with relevant example to write in main body paragraphs and clear opinion at the end for task 2.
- Organize your answer.
1. Introduction
2. Main body paragraph 1
3. Main body paragraph 2
4. Conclusion.
Use paragraphs to explain your answer clearly; put one idea in each paragraph. Do not repeat ideas using same words.
- Do not copy the question.
Do not copy the whole sentence from the question, you will not receive any marks for that; Try to paraphrase the question.
- Do not write too much or too little.
You have to write minimum 150 words for Task 1 and minimum 250 words for Task 2. The examiner is looking for quality rather than quantity but it will be safe if you start practice writing around 160 words for letter/chart and 270 words for essay.
- Use variety of sentences.
You have to show your grammatical range to the examiner to achieve higher band score. You will have to show that you can use simple, compound and complex sentences. Avoid informal language.
- Spelling mistakes.
Pay attention to spelling, otherwise you will lose marks for your mistakes.
- Time management.
Spend 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2, because task 2 worth twice marks compare to task 1. So, spend the time accordingly.
- Note: Do not use memorise answer or catchy lines because examiners are well trained to recognise them. Spend some time on re-reading and correcting your answer at the end.
Follow these strategies and you will reach a step closer to the band score you dreamed for.
