IELTS Writing Test - Task 1
General Training - Letter
This information will help you to write better letter in your IELTS General Training Task 1. In this task, candidates asked to write a letter on particular situation. It is highly recommended to spend only 20 minutes on it.
- Write at least 150 words.
- Use range of linking words.
- Avoid spelling mistakes.
- Punctuation marks (commas, full stop, semi colon and so on).
TYPE OF LETTERS.
1. Formal
- For suggestion / recommendation.
- Requesting information.
- Applying for job.
- Complaining for services.
2. Semi-formal
- Asking for permission.
- Complaining to landlord.
- Explain to someone ( neighbour).
3. Informal
- Inviting friend.
- Thanking.
- Apologies.
- Asking for advice.
Opening and closing for each type of letter:

Starting lines for Formal and Semi-formal Letter:

Closing lines for Formal and Semi-formal letter:
1. For apology:

2. For request:
- I look forward to your positive reply.
- I look forward to your prompt response.
- I look forward to your instant attention in this matter.
Starting lines for Informal Letter:
- I hope you and your family are well.
- How have you been?
- I hope this letter finds you in the pink of your health.
- It has been too long since we were in touch last.
- I hope everything is fine with you.
- I hope life is treating you well.
- I am glad to receive your letter after so long
Closing lines for Informal Letter:
- I am eagerly waiting for your reply.
- I look forward to your reply.
- I look forward to hearing from you soon.
